Why is it called fell a tree?

“To fell” is a perfectly good verb that mean “to cause to fall.” Sometimes you might hear a newscaster say that a storm felled power lines, or you might read in a book of stories that a boy named David felled a giant named Goliath. Because “to fell” is uncommon, there’s an argument to be made that it’s archaic.
